Side Lighting for your Landscape Photos

I have recently bought a lensbaby II. Have to fight off my son to get a turn to use it though. On Sunday, after seeing a client at the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens in Roodepoort; I took my lensbaby and the wife out for a drive towards the Hekpoort and Cradle areas. Catch my drift?

Focusing with the Lensbaby is still difficult for me and after trying several shots on and off the road and not achieving anything; I stopped at a grove of poplar trees and took a few shots of the tree trunks. I tried shooting the trees with the sun at my back, but the images was too flat. Knowing that side lighting helps to emphasize form and texture I took another few bracketed shots with the setting sun flowing into the grove from the right side. The shot is not that spectacular, but demonstrate how side lighting helps to create depth and dimensionality.

Untitled. ISO 250, 1/640th sec @ f/5.6. Canon 50D with Lensbaby 2. In Lightroom I slightly increased the exposure, and brightness and pushed the contrast up to 70. Thereafter in Adobe Photoshop I enhanced the tonal contrast by using Nik Color Effex and pushed the midtones up with curves.

  1. I like it! But try that on black and white film and it will be a classic.
